When my wife and I decided to build a life together, we knew we wanted it to be meaningful. Not just for us, but for the little family we were creating, including our loyal dog who quickly became a part of our story. Our journey has been shaped by a simple but powerful idea: to do all things as if for the Lord. This belief has guided every choice, every project, and every moment spent crafting handmade creations that reflect our love and purpose.
Finding Meaning in Handmade Work
For us, handmade is more than a style or a hobby. It’s a way of life. Each item we create carries a piece of our heart and intention. When you make something by hand, you slow down. You pay attention to details that mass production often overlooks. This approach has brought us closer as a couple and deepened our connection to the work we do.
It started small, just about a year ago when we moved into a new house and my wife told me she wanted an entry way table . This first project together for sure had its challenges but it was a project of love and by far one of our favorites. After this first project we continued to build things for our home and over time, our skills grew, and so did our confidence. We realized that handmade creations could be a way to share our values and faith with others. Every nail, every board, every carefully chosen material became an expression of gratitude and service.
Our Daily Rhythm with Handmade Creations
Our days in the shop normally start with slow mornings. We start with our bible reading, my wife with her coffee, me with my Mt Dew and our best good boy on the couch in between us. Then, we dive into our projects, whether it’s painting, woodworking, or crafting unique home décor pieces. Our pup's favorite part of the day is getting to go to the shop to supervise our work, a comforting presence that reminds us to enjoy the simple joys.
We work side by side, each bringing our strengths to the table. My wife has an eye for color and design, while I focus on the technical details, finishing touches, and sanding (my wife hates sanding). This teamwork makes the process rewarding and efficient. We also take breaks to play with our dog, which helps us refresh our minds and reset ourselves when we get stuck.
Serving Others Through Our Craft
Doing all things as if for the Lord means our work is not just about us. It’s about serving others with love and excellence. We carefully select materials that are sustainable and safe, knowing that our creations will become part of someone else’s home or life. This responsibility motivates us to maintain high standards and to keep learning.
We have had the joy of hearing stories from customers who found comfort or happiness in our handmade items. One family told us how a few benches we made became staples on walks around their property together. Another shared how a wooden book holder continuously brings joy and laughter to a wife every time she reads. These moments remind us why we do what we do.
Balancing Passion and Practicality
Turning a passion into a livelihood is not without challenges. We have had to learn how to manage time, finances, and customer expectations. Setting realistic goals and boundaries has been essential. We keep our focus on quality rather than quantity, which means sometimes saying no to projects that don’t align with our values or schedule.
Marketing handmade products can feel overwhelming, but we prefer to let our work speak for itself. Word of mouth and personal connections have been our strongest tools. We also enjoy sharing our story and process with customers, which builds trust and appreciation.
Lessons from Our Dog’s Presence
Our dog is more than a pet; he is a teacher in patience, loyalty, and joy. Watching him live fully in the moment encourages us to approach our craft with the same presence. He reminds us to take breaks, to enjoy the outdoors, and to celebrate small victories.
Encouragement for Those Starting Their Own Handmade Journey
If you are considering starting your own handmade business or simply want to create with more intention, here are a few tips from our experience:
Start with what you love: Focus on projects that bring you joy and align with your values.
Be patient: Skills and confidence grow over time. Don’t rush the process.
Work with others: Collaboration can bring new ideas and make the journey more enjoyable.
Keep your purpose clear: Let your faith or personal mission guide your decisions.
Listen to your customers: Their feedback can help you improve and connect more deeply.
Living a Life of Purpose Through Handmade Creations
Our story is still unfolding, but one thing remains constant: the commitment to do all things as if for the Lord. This mindset transforms everyday tasks into acts of worship and service. It turns handmade creations into meaningful gifts that carry love and intention.
